Welcome to the Communication Revolution

Unlocking Expression for Non‑Speakers

Presume competence. Build purposeful motor skills. Open the door to communication.

At Communication Revolution LLC, we believe that every person has thoughts, ideas, opinions, questions, hopes, and a voice that needs to be heard.

We provide Spelling to Communicate (S2C) services for nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals. S2C supports individuals with motor and sensory differences by helping them develop the purposeful motor skills needed to point to letters on a letterboard or keyboard and, ultimately, gain access to communicate more independently.

Who We Support

Individuals whose speech does not reliably provide them with a complete, conversational means of communication. This includes those with Autism, Apraxia, Downs Syndrome, Angelman’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other genetic, neurological, or developmental conditions that may affect reliable speech and purposeful motor control. They may be…

Nonspeakers

Individuals who do not use speech as their primary means of communication.

Minimal Speakers

Individuals who use limited spoken words or phrases, but whose speech may not fully express their thoughts, needs, or ideas.

Unreliable Speakers

Individuals who can speak, sometimes extensively, but whose spoken words may not consistently reflect what they intend to communicate. Their speech may include loops, scripting or echolalic expressions.

What Is Spelling to Communicate?

Spelling to Communicate, or S2C, is an approach that teaches individuals with motor and sensory differences the purposeful motor skills needed to communicate by pointing to letters to spell on a letterboard or keyboard.

For many nonspeakers, the challenge is not a lack of understanding—it is difficulty getting the body to reliably carry out an intended action. S2C works to build the connection between the brain and body through structured practice, gradually progressing toward more open and independent communication.

As motor skills become more reliable, spellers can begin to express their own thoughts, preferences, ideas, and perspectives—one letter at a time.

Presuming Competence Changes Everything

Unlocking Expression for Non‑Speakers

At Communication Revolution, we begin with a foundational belief: PRESUME COMPETENCE. This means our nonspeakers can and want to learn!

At the root of it all… The ability to speak does not define the ability to think.

We speak to our spellers age-appropriately, provide engaging and meaningful content, and recognize that outward actions do not necessarily reflect a person's intelligence or understanding.

Instead of asking, “How much does this person understand?” we begin by asking, “What might be possible when this person is given an accessible way to communicate?”

That shift in perspective can be powerful.

Reframing Behaviors

Unlocking Expression for Non‑Speakers

For many nonspeakers, moments of stress, excitement, or sensory overload can cause the body to respond before the thinking brain has time to catch up. The nervous system may shift into a fight, flight, or freeze response, resulting in impulsive or automatic body movements that may not reflect the person’s intentions.

Rather than viewing these actions simply as “behaviors,” we can begin to understand them as involuntary responses from a body that may be having difficulty with regulation and purposeful motor control. This shift in perspective encourages families, caregivers, and support staff to respond with greater understanding, patience, and appropriate support.

Most importantly, it helps us separate what the body is doing from what the person may be thinking, understanding, or intending.

Leading with Lessons

S2C sessions are anchored in the use of cognitive lessons specifically designed to support the development of:

Regulation — supporting the body so it is ready for learning and communication

Purposeful motor skills — strengthening the body's ability to carry out intentional movements

Accuracy and fluency — developing increasingly reliable pointing to letters

Cognitive engagement — providing age-appropriate lessons that challenge and engage the mind

Autonomy and agency — creating greater opportunities for spellers to express their own thoughts, preferences, and choices

Every speller is different. Progress happens at an individual pace, and sessions are tailored to meet each person where they are at while continuing to build toward greater communication.

About Communication Revolution

The name Communication Revolution represents something bigger than learning to point to letters.

It represents a change…

… in the way we think about access to communication as a basic human right.

… from judging intelligence by speech or outward behavior to presuming competence.

… from speaking about nonspeakers to creating opportunities to hear from them.

NOTHING ABOUT THEM WITHOUT THEM!

That is the revolution!
